SOYSAMBU CONSERVANCY

From my previous post, you do know how much I love my sleep! As you can imagine, I wasn’t too happy about waking up at 5 am and getting ready for our safari. The pick up time was at 5:30 am. Our driver was there on time in a brand new cruiser.

The trip started from our hotel to Soysambu Conservancy in Elementaita, about 30 minutes away. The check in at the conservancy was very slow but after about 15 minutes, we finally went into the conservancy and our game drive began.

We went straight for the lake, passing all the impalas on the way there and let me tell you something…it was beautiful with pink hues from all the flamingos. The flamingos have really moved from Lake Nakuru to Lake Elementaita and Bogoria. Upon leaving, we spotted a spotted hyena running along the lake. Did you know spotted hyenas can run pretty fast up to 60 km/hour and can run for long distances without tiring? In search of the heads (lions), we saw a few buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks and more impalas. We then saw a pack of spotted hyenas, about 10 of them. The biggest highlight of the safari was the giraffes. We saw more than 30 giraffes, all beautiful and majestic in how they walk. My friend said they are all majestic until they start running…..it’s all awkward and funny.

We weren’t lucky in finding the lions. We headed for Lake Elmentaita Serena Camp and checked in at around noon. We were welcomed with a glass of grape juice or as they said, non alcoholic wine. The camp’s Naturalist, Denge,  advised on the activities offered at the camp and their prices, directions of everything at the camp and time for meals.

We were shown to our room where we freshened up and got ready for lunch. The lunch was an al-a-carte. Their pasta puttanesca was to die for! We ate and even asked for more. We got to meet the chef, Lydia, who was such a darling and she gave us the recipe for the pasta.

Have I told you about the rooms? It is tented, has a welcoming area with a closet and coffee/tea station, the bedroom is very spacious with a huge bed and a lounge seat. I was mostly impressed by the bathroom, it was big with two huge sinks and mirrors, two showers and a toilet separately. It had a back porch, with seats for lounging. You could see the lake, which was about 200 meters away, the flamingos, a few waterbucks and zebras. I loved it!
