Bush and Beach: How to Pair a Kenya Safari with Zanzibar, Diani or Lamu

Bush and Beach: How to Pair a Kenya Safari with Zanzibar, Diani or Lamu

September 8, 2026By Creeks Tours Team3 min read

After a week of dawn game drives, nothing beats warm Indian Ocean water. Here's how Kenya's Diani Beach, historic Lamu and Tanzania's Zanzibar compare, how to get from the bush to the beach, and when to go.

There's a moment on every bush-and-beach trip that we love: the first morning when nobody wakes you at 5:45. You open your eyes to the sound of the ocean instead of a lion's roar, and a week of dust, early starts and extraordinary sightings settles into something like peace. Kenya and Tanzania have some of the finest coastline in Africa, and both are an easy hop from the safari parks.

Diani Beach: Kenya's easiest beach escape

Diani's 17 km of white sand on Kenya's south coast is regularly named one of Africa's best beaches. The water is warm, a coral reef protects the lagoon, and there's something for every mood: snorkelling in Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, a glass-bottom boat trip, seeing colobus monkeys in the Kaya Kinondo sacred forest, kitesurfing, or nothing at all.

Easy
Getting there

Fly from Nairobi to Ukunda (Diani) in about an hour, or straight from the Maasai Mara via scheduled connections. The Madaraka Express train to Mombasa is another scenic option.

Must-try
Do this

A day trip to Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti for dolphins, snorkelling and a seafood lunch on the island.

Jul – Mar
Best months

Dry, sunny and warm. Kitesurfers love the steady winds from December to March and June to September.

Diani and Kenya coast trips

Lamu: the soul of the Swahili coast

Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are no cars. Donkeys and dhows are still the way to get around, carved wooden doors line narrow lanes, and the call to prayer drifts over rooftop terraces at sunset. Walk along the shore to Shela for miles of empty dunes and beach.

Lamu trips

Zanzibar: the spice island

Zanzibar needs little introduction: turquoise water, powder-white sand, and Stone Town, another UNESCO site, where Arab, Persian, Indian and African influences meet in a maze of alleys, markets and carved doors. Spice farms, Prison Island's giant tortoises, sunset dhow cruises and the red colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest fill the days, if you want them filled.

How to plan the perfect bush and beach trip

  1. 1
    Safari first, beach last

Safari days start early and are full of energy. Finishing on the beach lets you recover before the flight home. It also means your safari clothes don't sit damp in a beach bag for a week.

  2. 2
Fly from the bush to the beach

Scheduled flights link the Maasai Mara with Nairobi, and Nairobi with Diani, Lamu and Zanzibar. A same-day bush-to-beach connection is often possible, so you skip a night in the city.

  3. 3
Give the beach at least three nights

Two nights barely gets you unpacked. Three to five nights is the sweet spot for real rest.

  4. 4
    Watch the luggage limit

Light aircraft to the Mara usually allow 15 kg; coastal flights are often 20 kg. Pack for the stricter limit, and leave extras in Nairobi.

  5. 5
Avoid April and May on the coast

These are the wettest, most humid months on the Indian Ocean coast, and some beach hotels close for renovation. June to March is ideal.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to combine a Kenya safari with Zanzibar or Diani?

Diani is easier: a one-hour flight from Nairobi with no border, visa or extra insurance. Zanzibar adds Stone Town's history and island atmosphere but needs a Tanzanian visa, Zanzibar's mandatory $44 insurance, and often a yellow fever certificate. Both have superb beaches.

How do you get from the Maasai Mara to the beach?

Fly from the Maasai Mara to Nairobi's Wilson Airport, then connect to Diani (Ukunda), Lamu (Manda) or Zanzibar. A same-day connection is often possible. Driving is possible but takes most of two days.

Should you do the safari or the beach first?

Safari first. Game drives start early and need energy, so finishing with a few days at the beach lets you rest before the long flight home.

When is the best time for a Kenya beach holiday?

June to March is best, with the driest, sunniest weather from December to March and from July to October. April and May are the wettest months on the Kenyan and Zanzibar coasts.

How many days do you need for a bush and beach holiday?

Ten to fourteen days is ideal: five to eight days on safari and three to five nights at the beach. A shorter version, three or four days on safari and three at the beach, works well too.
