Nairobi is the only capital city in the world with a national park on its doorstep. With six hours or more between flights, you can be watching lions and rhinos, or feeding a giraffe by hand, and still be back for your connection. Here's how.
Most airports give you a coffee and a bench. Nairobi gives you lions. Nairobi National Park begins just a few kilometres from the airport perimeter, and its plains run right up to the edge of the city, so you can photograph a giraffe with skyscrapers in the background. If you're connecting through Nairobi to the coast, to the rest of Africa, or onward to Asia or the Middle East, a layover here can become the best part of your journey.
What you can do, by layover length
- 6h6 – 7 hoursA game drive in Nairobi National Park
Straight from arrivals to the park for a 2–3 hour game drive. You're very likely to see giraffe, zebra, buffalo, ostrich and antelope, with good chances of black or white rhino and lion. Then straight back to the airport.
- 8h8 – 10 hoursPark plus the Giraffe Centre
An early game drive, then the Giraffe Centre in Langata, where you can feed Rothschild's giraffes from a raised platform at eye level. It's pure joy for all ages.
- 10h10 – 14 hoursThe full Nairobi wildlife day
A dawn game drive, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust orphan elephant nursery at its late-morning visiting hour (booked in advance), the Giraffe Centre, and lunch in leafy Karen. You can add the Karen Blixen Museum, the farmhouse made famous by Out of Africa.
- 24hOvernightSlow down and stay
With a night in Nairobi you can do all of the above at a relaxed pace, add a cultural visit to Bomas of Kenya or a crafts stop at Kazuri Beads, and still make your morning flight.
The highlights, explained
Kenya's first national park and one of its most successful rhino sanctuaries. Open grassland, forest and riverine bush are home to lions, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, hippos and more than 400 bird species, against the backdrop of the city skyline.
The world-famous orphan elephant nursery, where rescued baby elephants are raised before returning to the wild. Visiting is limited to one hour a day and must be booked ahead, so plan this one in advance.
Run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, it supports the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. Feed them from the platform, and be ready for a very long tongue.
Leafy Karen is home to the Karen Blixen Museum, artisan shops, and some of Nairobi's loveliest garden restaurants. It's the perfect lunch stop.
Practical things to know
Plan to be back at the airport three hours before an international departure. Nairobi traffic can be unpredictable, and we build that into your timing.
The park opens at dawn, and the first hours of the day are best for predators. Morning arrivals are ideal for a layover safari.
If your bags are checked through to your final destination, travel light with just a daypack. If not, they can travel with you in the vehicle.
Our Nairobi layover tour
We designed our layover tour around your flight times, not a fixed timetable. A professional guide meets you at arrivals, builds the day around how many hours you have, and returns you to the airport with plenty of time to spare.
Frequently asked questions
