AFCON 2027 lands in Kenya's best safari season. Here's how to fit wildlife around your fixtures: what you can see in one free day, two days or three, when to fly instead of drive, and why staying on after the final might be the smartest plan of all.
Most fans travelling to AFCON 2027 will spend some days in Nairobi without a match. In most host cities, that means another day of sightseeing. In Nairobi, it means lions.
Kenya's capital is the only city in the world with a national park on its edge, and the Maasai Mara, Africa's most famous safari reserve, is a short flight away. This guide shows how to fit wildlife around your fixtures without risking a match.
How much time do you have between matches?
At an Africa Cup of Nations, each team plays three group games, usually a few days apart, before the knockout rounds. Those gaps are your safari windows. Here's what fits in each one, starting from Nairobi.
- 1Half a day to a dayNairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre and the elephant orphanage
A morning game drive in Nairobi National Park gives you a very good chance of giraffe, zebra, buffalo, antelope and rhino, and a fair chance of lion, with the city skyline behind them. Add the Giraffe Centre in Langata to feed endangered Rothschild's giraffes at eye level, or the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage, whose visits run late morning and need booking in advance. You're back at your hotel by mid-afternoon.
- 2Two days, one nightLake Naivasha and Hell's Gate, or Amboseli
Lake Naivasha is about two hours' drive into the Rift Valley: boat trips among hippos, a walking safari on Crescent Island, and cycling in Hell's Gate National Park. Or fly about 45 minutes to Amboseli for big elephant herds under Kilimanjaro. It's short but unforgettable, and the views are best in the clear dry-season mornings.
- 3Three days or moreThe Maasai Mara
The real thing. Light aircraft from Nairobi's Wilson Airport reach the Mara airstrips in about an hour, and your guide meets you on the runway for your first game drive. Three days give you four or five drives and a real chance at lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant. By road it's five to six hours each way, which eats a day at each end.
- 4After the finalThe Mara in migration season, then the coast
If your dates are flexible, this is the one we'd choose. The tournament ends on 17 July, and from about mid-July the wildebeest and zebra of the Great Migration cross from Tanzania into the Mara. Three or four nights on safari, then a few days on Diani Beach, and you've had the trip of a lifetime with the football at the start of it.
Which safari fits your gap?
| Free time | Best option | Getting there | Main wildlife |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half a day | Nairobi National Park | 20–60 min by road, depending on traffic | Rhino, giraffe, buffalo, lion |
| 1 day | Park + Giraffe Centre or Sheldrick | By road, around Nairobi | Rhino, giraffe, orphaned elephants |
| 2 days | Lake Naivasha or Amboseli | 2 hrs by road / 45 min flight | Hippos, birds / elephant herds |
| 3+ days | Maasai Mara | About 1 hr flight / 5–6 hrs by road | Big cats, elephant, from mid-July the migration |
| A week after the final | Mara + coast | Flights throughout | Everything, then the Indian Ocean |
Fly or drive to the Maasai Mara?
| At a glance | Fly from Wilson | Drive by road |
|---|---|---|
| Time each way | About 1 hour | 5–6 hours |
| Safari time on a 3-day trip | 4–5 game drives | 2–3 game drives |
| Cost | Higher (flight per person) | Lower, especially for groups |
| Luggage | 15 kg soft bag | No strict limit |
| Best for | Short gaps between matches | Longer trips, groups, a slower pace |
If your safari sits between two matches, fly. The time you save is time with the animals, and you're not at the mercy of a long road day before a fixture. The 15 kg soft-bag limit on bush flights is easy if you leave your main luggage at your Nairobi hotel, which we arrange as standard.
Plan around the 1 July park fee change
Here's a tip most guides won't give you. The Maasai Mara reserve fee for non-residents is $100 per adult per day until 30 June, and $200 from 1 July. A three-night Mara safari during the group stage saves a couple of hundred dollars per person in park fees alone, compared with the same trip after the final.
The trade-off is wildlife: the migration herds usually arrive from mid-July. The resident lions, leopards, cheetahs and elephants are there all year, though, and late June is already dry season, so game viewing is excellent either way.
Three ways we'd plan it

Frequently asked questions
Can I go on safari between AFCON matches in Nairobi?
Yes. Nairobi National Park is on the edge of the city, so even a half day between matches is enough for a game drive. With three days or more you can fly to the Maasai Mara in about an hour.
How far is the Maasai Mara from Nairobi?
About an hour by light aircraft from Wilson Airport, or five to six hours by road.
Will the Great Migration be in the Maasai Mara during AFCON 2027?
The herds usually begin arriving in the Maasai Mara from about mid-July, around the end of the tournament on 17 July. Timing varies with the rains each year. Late June is already excellent for resident wildlife such as lions, leopards and elephants.
Is it cheaper to do a safari before or after 1 July?
Before. The Maasai Mara reserve fee for non-residents is $100 per adult per day until 30 June and $200 from 1 July.
Can you plan a safari around fixtures that aren't confirmed yet?
Yes. We build flexible itineraries now and fix the dates once fixtures are published, so you can secure camps early without locking yourself into dates that might change.
